Mamoru Oishi, director of the National Geographic Channel, had told an audience in San Diego that the sea could be the most incredible thing he had ever seen.
“It’s the most spectacular landscape that I’ve ever seen,” he said. “There’s more land than you could possibly imagine. And it’s full of things to find out about that you might never have known before.”

But the episode did not impress some on social media, like the author and comedian John Oliver, who wrote on Twitter: “Where would you like to see more sea wildlife? In between all this action, there are two great things – the ocean and the people.”
In response, Oishi said: “I’d love to see more great whales and sea otters.”
Oliver has now written an online book about the show and has been contacted by Oishi.

Some were upset to learn of the lack of ocean creatures – the most frequently mentioned was polar bear or bear cubs – even though the animals featured are more commonly seen in the ocean.
For example the film about sharks in the Pacific called Shark Tale featured polar dolphins, porpoises, orcas and walruses. The film was produced by Disney and screened at New York’s Museum of Natural History in October.
Oliver, however, has been critical of the show and warned it could have a detrimental effect on the environment.
“What Disney really needed to do was pull out of underwater filming because it was such a mess,” he wrote. “What has been shown, I think, only accentuates what we’re trying to prevent.”
